Dear friends, Congrats to codemakers of new IS 800 for bringing out a very good code & successfully defending the same. WSM is proposed to be retained for a while till limit state approach is digested. Is it a truth or myth that WSM is more conservative? Does WSM recognise permissible statistical variations in working loads & permissible stresses? If no,should WSM be allowed without a penalty? regards, P Kadam

In the limit states code the partial safety factors are calibrated such that the designs based on the limit states method are essentially the same as that from working stress method. Hence, just by designing based on the limit states method alone one is not likely to obtain any greater economy. However the limit states method would allow plastic and other analysis method through which some economic benefit may accrue. Further, the improvements in design provisions in the new draft code based on latest State of the art could result in some ecomony. Finally in a few situation the existing code was unconservative, and the new code has corrected it, because of which new designs based on limit states method may be heavier. However, the limit states method proposed is most rational and will help to improve the partial safety factors in a rational way as the technology improves.
We have also carried out comparison studies of strength of different type of members based on the existing and new codes and find the results 不是非常不同(通常智慧hin -15% and +25%).
