Dear All,
I want to highlight a shortcoming in IS:800:1984.
In Section 5 on design of compression members code provides guidelines for design of compound sections eg. laced (cl.5.7 ) or Battened (cl.5.. Code also provides requirements for b/b sections (cl.5.9).
In India two I sections connected in (+) formation is widely used as Industrial building columns. One section is split and two halves are welded on either side of Intact section. This is predominantly axial compression member with some moment due to continuity and framing beam eccentricity.
是:800不提供指南design of such sections namely
a. Welding requirement for interconnection of two members b. Diaphragm stiffener requirement c. Determination of Allowable bending stress values.
Since this configuration is mostly used in India only, International codes like AISC-ASD and BS:5950 do not have provisions for same. Draft version of IS:800 (To be published) also do not address this issue. In my opinion due to wide use in India provision for such sections shall be provided in IS:800
