Hello Everybody !

We must thank SEFI for organising this E-Conf on a very important issue of
Licensing of structural engineers.
A common man relies on the structural engineer for his life and safety. Till
在古吉拉特邦地震,那里was a lot of unawareness in the society
regarding role of a structural engineer. Without any proper licensing sytem,
an individual has no way to know the competence of the person who designs
the structure, in which he is going to stay.
Presently, some Govt bodies/ muncipal authorities are issuing licenses to
structural enginners. But, most of them lack a proper system of evaluation
of a person to whom the license is issued. for In my opinion, the licensing
should be at national level (atleast at State level), otherwise with the
present system, one has to keep obtaining licenses from many authorities for
designing projects in various areas.
In my opinion, the license should have categories based on the type of
structure that individual is allowed to design. There has to be a separate
license (or category) for designing high-rise buildings, ESR's, heavy
Industrial buildings, chimney like structures. The present system of
licensing takes into consideration only (mostly) qualification and
experience. I dont believe that only experience gives the required
competence to the person. I have seen many people doing monotonus
structures, lack grossly the knowledge about other type of structures (ten
years experience could be = one year experience repeated for ten times).
The licensing authority should have a panel comprising of people from
educational institutes and senior professionals. A written examination would
be desirable as a prequalification prior to appearing before the panel for
interview.

This would help to eliminate incompetent people risking the life of a common
man.

Best regards,

Upendra Purandare
Structural Engineer, Pune

Dear all,
Sorry for late participation.
No more licenses.Architects have only one body enabling them to practice anywhere. We all register with Inst Of Engineer & their
membership enables us to issue stability certificates etc acceptable to statutory authorities.Where is need of separate licencing?
Instead in order to improve, we must have voluntary self-assessment/improvement programmes organised by fora like SEFI.
Pleeeeeeeese do not complicate issue.
regards,
P Kadam
