DEAR SEFIANS,
HELLO !
I WOULD LIKE TO CLARIFY THE FOLLOWING POINTS REGARDING EXPANSION JOINT/SEPARATION GAP IN A MULTISTOREYED BLDG.
- IS IT NECESSARY TO PROVIDE EXP JOINT IN RAFT AND RETAINING WALLS ALSO IN A DOUBLE BASEMENT OF 15 STOREYED BLDG..
-WHAT PRECUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN IF EXP JOINT IS NOT PROVIDED IN 70 MTR LONG BLOCK OF A BLDG . DOES WIDTH OF BLDG PLAY ANY PART IN DECIDING THE LOCATION OF EXP JOINT
- SEPRATION GAP AS PER IS-1893 -2002 SHOULD BE R TIMES THE MAX DEFLECTION (R/2+R/2) FOR TWO BLOCKS . SOMETIMES IT COMES OUT TO BE 300 MM , IS IT PRACTICABLE TO PROVIDE/TREAT THIS MUCH WIDTH OF JOINT?
THANKS

Expansion/Movement Joint Buildings
It is very specific question but the answer is not very specific
Since it is the monolithic slab area used in the design of the 3 dimensional analysis of the proposed structure that shall dictate the empirical understanding of the location of the movement joint in any buildings as well as the number of the joints continuity
To my understanding it is the experience & concept of the engineers design capability to decide how many square meters of the slab area is permissible to form the joint in continuous structures particularly up to multistory class
The rafts may be given movement provision but not essential
Columns in both structures can be given the joint but footing can be one for two columns/combined
Generally 900 to 1000 sqm is the limit but due to improved quality & grading of the concrete & controlled use, the area may be increased keeping the other building distant to let the building adopt sway action due to seismic stresses
Should u depend on the code formula or some other formula, I have no comments since codes cannot solve all engineering problems. Engineering rests with individual intelligence & concept
