Dear Mr. Vijay Patil
Thank you very much for a very important question
QUOTE
"I believe there is a steel called corten steel. It is supposed to have a
sacrificial layer which in turn protects the inner layer.

However it is not clear whether such steel is only for structural steel
plates or can be for reinforcement bars too"
UNQUOTE

REPLY:
Corten steel is ONLY for structurals and other steel components which are
open to atmospheric corrosion. This is NOT suitable for reinforcement bars

CORTEN matches with WR-Fe 480A of IS 11587 - SPECIFICATION FOR STRUCTURAL
WEATHER RESISTANT STEELS it depends on the following corrosion resisting
elements:

P 0.08
Si 0.4
Cr 0.4
Ni 0.3
Cu 0.5
While it is good for Weather resistance it will not perform well when
embedded in concrete.
I draw your attention to the NOTE 3 of AMENDMENT NO. 2 MAY 2002.to IS 1786
which speels this out in clear terms as under:
"User may note that there is a danger of pitting and crevice corrosion when
weathering steels (that is, those with chemical composition conforming to
IS 11587 : 1986 ‘Specification for structural weather resistant steel’ are
embedded in chloride contaminated concrete"

Trust this clarifies your doubt.
