Live - - - - Live Long and Healthy
We are discussing about the Durability of Concrete ,a topic of utmost importance equally to all Engineers ,Builders and Users of structures .
Durability is the technical description of Longevity. All constructions , since the time immemorial , aimed for longevity of structures in whatever forms they were , and with whatsoever materials available during the times.Man's quest for Durability never ended and will continue to find solutions in changing times with regard to construction boundaries ,construction techniques with usage of superior materials.
Presently we are in arena of High Strength Concrete and High Tensile Steel reinforcement and discussions in the subject e -conf are aimed to have views from wider spectrum of experts and intelligentsia of Engineering related to this field. Sefi Admin Madam Alpa Sheth must be complimented for initiative and efforts in arranging this E- conference .
Since Yesterday, fruitful discussions have been taking place in the e-conf. A welcome note at the outset of e- conference from Dr N.Subramanian sir ,a well known luminary at sefi and Author of many books, is very thought provoking . The fact that concrete is the next to water in human consumption is really interesting . The Olden structures & monuments have passed the Durability test by standing to the time even today but whether Modern structures designed with computer perfections and built in highly merchandised scenario will able to fulfill the durability requirements especially in more polluted environment of CO2 and chemicals.
Mr Vijay Kulkarni is highly accomplished and expert of this field as already introduced by Madam Alpa Sheth , and posting from him reg crucial issues provides real brain storming on the subject topic. While old concrete structures are standing to the test of time , some modern concrete structures show signs of deterioration early ,especially in coastal areas .Use of RMC with captive batching / mixing plants is real achievement of modern technology on concrete preparation but culture of QC is still wanting with many RMC suppliers.
Training and educating site supervisors who handle RMC works is very much needed. There is a separate code on RMC but many clients still quote IS 456 in specifications of RMC which leads to cause of conflict. Mr Kulkarni feels that IS 456 provisions needs to be reviewed for now , to keep pace with research in respect of Concrete Durabilty.
Other postings from sefi regular Er Arun Kashikar is worth noting regarding use of EPS concrete (light weight and 6Mpa strength) for shear walls but how for the use of 6Mpa concrete is suitable from durability is a matter of concern expressed by him.
Posting from Er JigneshV Chokshi emphasizes on the right material selection , mixing transporting and curing of concrete while describing the durability as team effort of various ingredients forming conc .
Thanking all participating in e-conf and hope to learn more in coming days during the conf.
with best regards
