Sirs,
腐蚀对c的耐久性是一个主要的威胁oncrete structures. Fusion Bond Epoxy treatment is a common practise in Mumbai. However, is there any other more trusted technique being used world wide for the similar atmosphericexposure like Mumbai?

Yes, cathodic prevention/protection can be applied for a longer service life, but these are very costly methods. Surface coating of concrete, use of corrosion inhibitors etc. are relatively cost effective, but considered as short term measures. Nonetheless, there is no substitute for a good quality concrete!

Dear Eng janikant S. Shinde
Concrete Protection Provisions

  1. Concrete requires protection to both location that is beolow ground & above ground.
  2. Belw ground protection is provided by bitumious membranes, that are referred to as waterproofing one but, purpose of these membranes, is to provide protection to concrete from adverse chemical effects imminent from soil.
  3. Above gound conrete is exposed to weather conditions & requires no further treatment other than its protections. Protection is applied as reisitive coating to effects of exposure. Many such coating are available form construction manufacturers like Foscroc, Sika, MBT/Degusaa etc & many Indian manufacturers as well.
  4. Suface is well prepared to receive applications of such effective coatings.
  5. Cathodic protection is also, applicable but, its scope is limited to major facilities plants, where continuous monitoring is required to ensure corrosion status of steel bars. When Cathodic protection is included, steel rebars cannot be used epoxy coated.

ASCE members have opposed to the use of FBEC reinforcemnts since such reinforcements have shown less bond strength. They are rather of opinion of using higher strength of concrete, more cover and admixtures. I should draw attention to our latest IRC -21 where characteristic strengths and anchorage lengths have been specified for hazardous environments. In NH 8 I myself also suggested using FBEC reinforcements but later I changed my opinion.

Dear Er Gautam,

Fusion Bonded Epoxy coated reinforcements are increasingly used in Bridges all over the world. Even in India they are used in Bridges. In a recent paper " 35-Year Field Performance of Epoxy-Coated Reinforcing Bars" Published in the Nov. 2011 issue of Concrete International, ACI, the authors state that Epoxy-Coated bars in surveyed bridge decks show little to no corrosion after 35 years of service. Is 456 does not give provisions for FBEC bars; Naturally the bond length has to be increased. Eqns for bond length are provided in ACI code. You may also like to read:
http://epoxyinterestgroup.org/index.cfm/publications/reports

When using such bars care should be taken during transportation and handling. While bending the bars, the coating may be damaged, which may be treated at site.

Regards
Subramanian, F.ASCE

Dear Sir

I have gone through the details very carefully and I suggest application of water soluble silane complound on the finished concrete surface all over after curing stage so that theer is no further absorption of water by concrete and hence its life increases.

Deterioration of any structure is related to either its quality or its surrounding condition/s. While protective measures have been many and many more are coming up, I strongly believe that any construction made with an absolute quality (near 100%), keeping all parameters fully satisfied, density of concrete is achieved, honeycomb can be controlled, poor cover to reinforcement can also be overcome and all - all the factors contributing to quality structure can be achieved.

Deterioration due to corrosion is certainly a matter of concern these days, but a structure ctrated with strict quality measures and disciplined mindset would not allow the enemy named corrosion to exist.

Selection of protective measure has to be very very subjective. The element which really invites deterioration - say corrosion or salinity or chemical fumes / splashes - should be closely examined and only that element which resists the element causing corrosive conditions must be selected.

There is a tailor made medicine for every desease.

Dear Er Vinay,

Coating concrete surfaces is another method to reduce corrosion. But is it not expensive? Can you provide some cost details?

Best wishes
