Dear All,
Welcome to the 6th e-conference on "Proposed Revisions to IS 1893 and IS 13920". During the past twenty months since its inception on January 26 2003, SEFI has conducted five very successful e-Conferences on wide ranging topics of interest to structural engineers such as "Licensing issues in structural engineering profession", "Techniques in computer modeling of structures", "Are Indian codes geared up for the new Century"?, "IS-800 draft revised code" and most recently on "Draft code on Seismic evaluation & strengthening of structures".
The latter two e-Conferences were very significant events in that for the first time in India, there was an interactive forum between academicians who write the codes and engineers who are responsible for interpreting and implementing them. These e-Conferences generated some very insightful comments which gave the code writers a perspective on the issues of concern amongst practicing engineers and other academicians.
The present conference is meant to discuss the proposed revisions to IS 1893 and IS 13920. These draft codes and supporting documents have been prepared under the GSDMA-IITK project of Review of Codes as part of the disaster mitigation program. You will find a lot of good work has gone into their preparation. You may, if you have not already done so, download the revised codes and their explanatory codes and design examples from the URLs appended below (at the end of the email).
Your comments will be very useful in giving final shape to these documents, so please do review them and give your valuable input. Let's make ourselves heard and participate in the code writing process- it is part of the nation building exercise. Of particular interest would be our reaction to the explanatory codes and design examples. There are some questions you may want to think about: Are the explanatory codes informative and do they help the engineer in understanding better the code rationale? Are the examples useful? What more would you like to see in them?
Let's debate on these documents for whole of this week. So hope to see you around a lot in this week.
Best wishes,
Alpa Sheth
