Dear sangeeta,

regarding floating columns, let me explain one of our recent project n dubai.
项目是一个40层塔和两个10 storied building in one podium ( RCC ),this 10 story building is completely resting on transfet girder of 2 span supported on wall. ie, 1 span of 30 m and 2 span is cantilever of 13 m, this 13 meter is extending towards marina (below this 13 meter is water body extended from sea), this transfer girder is 2.8 m thick and (like box girder) 30 meter wide.this is carrying all the 10 stories above, more over due to architectural set back there are other floating columns on the roof (pent house).this transfer girder is analysed for construction stage analysis and dynamic analysis too...
floating columns r vry common here, all the towers 40,70stories will have somany floating columns( some columns are directly resting on slab tself, without any beam at all) with huge central core for lift and stair case...i do not know exactly how many are ther in BURG DUBAI TOWEr world tallest building ( 710 meter high), let me enquir and ll update..
our aim is that how to deal this critical situations, i dont think we cannot avoid this architectural set backs...
Most of the hotel buildings are having almost similar case of flating column becoz of the column free space requied for convention hall in ground floor.

Can u plaese expalin in details about virandeel girders and how best is this to takle this situations??.

Regards.

Dear Arafath,

Does this region, with so many buildings with floating columns, fall under the category of seismically active zone?

Does anybody know that, in highly active seismic region like Japan, whether they design buildings with floating columns or not? If they do, it will be worth to study those structural systems and their analysis rather than to ban the floating columns.

In my opinion, a building with floating columns is having a space frame with few vertical elements not reaching the ground. In this case, the danger lies in the fact that as the design seismic forces are much lower than actual seismic forces, the girder supporting the floating column, designed for this lower seismic forces, is prone to failure during an earthquake. If we can solve this problem, the structural system should work fine.

Any research material available on this?

Regards.
