My earnest request to all Sefians is to avoid "floating" columns and "hidden" beams like the plague.

Let's not waste time discussing these inane issues.

A great deal of torsion is likely to come
on the transfer system due to the mass above which may
try to rotate about the floating columns .This heavy
torsion has to be borne by the transfer system.
Another fact is that this transfer system is subjected
to very high concentrated loads of the floating
columns . Special detailing has to be provided in these
beams to cater to highly stressed regions due to
concentrated load in the beam.

\0very well said...it must be made a rule not to agree to adopt them in
general....however some special industrial structures as suggested by some
one in the forum might be required but we must make a detailed non linear
analysis

Dear all,

I accept Mr.Barua's proposal of not discussing about the " hidden beam"
because it is not really existing.

But it is not the case with the floating columns.Eventhough a Str.
Engr.should not advocate it anywhere, he cannot alone avoid this.
Now these transfer girder systems are quite usual. And we cannot run away
from these saying these are not good structural systems.
我们have to take it as a challenge. And it is not that it is not workable at
all. There are good computer programmes which can handle this non linear
analysis.
But ofcourse this system is not at all economical.

regards,
Biju.
