Your opinion please.

In continuous RCC frame structures, the building is divided in Blocks of about 40 meter in length, at the joints two columns are erected on same footing, i.e the building separated in superstructure and continuous at base i.e. at foundation. Both cases have their merits and demerits, what the code says in this respect.

Dear Mr. sidhudaljeet

Latest revision of IS 456:2000 clearly allows at the location of expansion joints columns can be provided on same foundation. And that is waht normally followed into practice.

But provide clear gap between two columns as per IS1893:2002, with due considerations to Pounding effects.

Makarand

Dear Sefians
We should look at historically durable structures and dwell upon. Taj Mahal, Humayun Tomb, etc do not have any expansion Joint and date back to hundreds of years of survival despite onslaught of the climate and also many earthquakes. Indian Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhawan, Victoria Memorial, etc are the examples of this century.
Why expansion joint not needed in these structures?
Can any one come out with reasoning?
I have a logical and correct reasoning but let others come out with independent thoughts.

With regards to all

Yours

17 December 2005

These are all masonry structures and full of joints between the stones. Such joints probably allow /absorb thermal strains without distress.

I think thermal expansion is all because of type of material used in construction. In early age structures, the Engg/ Arct. Must have given thought on these points & we can avoid thermal expansion up to certain points.
