Dear Sefians
Please tell me
1. what is codel provsion for expansion/isolation joint incase of long contineuous RCC buildings. should the building be isolated rigt from the base or foundations can be common ?.
2. Incase it is seprate then what should be the joint width, for EQ point of wiew should it be sufficient to avoid knocking/hammering action ?.
3 after providing that much joint width can we call it contineuous ?.
Most of the expansion joints are provided in superstructure only. foundations are common. what is the effectiveness of such joints, incase of earthquake this is the point where we have concentation of all the shearforce & stress. How we see it in referance of base isolation and base combination ?.

For RCC buildings, the codal provsion is that a building having more than 40 m length shall have an expansion joint. The term itself signifies that the provision is for thermal strains (expansions /contractions). The usual width is 50 mm. It is not necessary to separate the foundations, as thermal strains below ground may be ignored.

In case of crumple joints for isolating structures with different natual frequencies, the width of the joint should be computed from horizontal sway computations, plus an allowance for separation during out-of-phase movement of the two adjoining structures.

While I agree with what has been said, try to avoid columns in same line so that mastic pad can be avoided. Rangarao
