BANGALORE: Five construction workers at software major Infosys building in Electronic City were crushed to death on Wednesday morning when the building collapsed.
The five labourers Nagaraj, Tirupathi, Ramesh, Nagappa and Vijaykumar all in their 20's were working on a massive glass facade. All the workers hailed from Raichur district. The labourers were working on the sixth floor when the incident occurred. All five were taken to the St John's Hospital.
Three other workers Gafoor, Venkappa and Biju were admitted in a critical condition, said Mabel Vasnaik of St John's Hospital.
The DCP (south-east) Soumendu Mukherjee said they had registered cases under Section 304 A for causing death due to negligence. A post mortem will be conducted on Thursday, added the police.

What is of interest to us is the cause of accident, negletful site safety precautions even in such High Tech Environment. The management owe an explanation to the society for such a tragic event. It is not the Contractor only the Client primarily owes responsibility for safety of workers.Construction organisation will look forward for a detailed report. We need not look towards West to bring in Safety measures at site.

To avoid the disasters in constructions done by unorganised contractors :
I feel that civil construction of any magnitude from small housing to bigger ones must be properly documented and signed by competent engineer ( at least Dploma -civil engg) who should supervise/ inspect the work ---,if not regularily( due to small project size/fimancial constraints) then in stages . The standard formats shall be made available giving the 必要的检查/ checl列表在每一个阶段的缺点tuction and these shall be signed . checks shall be documented for: i) Founding Level --- The foundation level must be checked at site and signed . This will solve many problems of construction indusry. ii) Fondation reinf plcement, cover etc iii) column reinf placement
The above is very important because any error in foundation is difficult to rectify.
iii) check for centring staging adequacy - to avoid mishap during const.
iv) slab /Beam reinf at each Floor / Roof Level
v) curing of works etc etc
A system of mandatory checksshall be enforced to ensure that construction is done in a responsible way to avoid disasters as reported time to time. The Architect involved must hire a part time/full time experienced supervision consultant -at least diploma civil--- to fulfill the above.
