Dear Bhavin,
Thank you for your spread sheet. Would like to see it soon.
Regarding design in Staad:
1. I prefer to use staad for design of Structural Steel. Structural Steel design in Staad is very good since long ago. But for concrete design it was very poor. I know that the old scenario got changed.
2.我更喜欢使用Staad进行分析。这种方式我can manage using only one Staad Lock. To be able to design in different codes I need License of different codes to buy.
3. If possible please see that the concrete design of staad is tallying with hand design. Share us your findings.
4.我正在寻找一些Structura的电子表格l steel design using ACI code. Please help me by sending those spreadsheet to my mail id a_bhattacharjee[AT]yah... or send Link.

I appreciate your appeal. I am preparing an excel sheet which gives the column design results calculated in staad to excel with column no., Area of steel required & Area of concrete required. I hope this may be helpful. As it prepares I will upload for your invaluable comments.
Another thing that I want to discuss with all members is Staad Design Parameters. Most of the Indian people are using staad for analysis. Some are using analysis results and design the elements manually. But as we know we can also design the elements with using staad if we use proper design parameters. There are Lots of design parameters available in STAAD. So I think we must discuss them in this forum. And Check the design made in STAAD with manual design. STAAD design will save lots of engineering hours.
Thanks. Bhavin

Dear Friends,
I would like to draw attention of our forum members. I have seen that now-a-days nobody is contributing their spreadsheets/programs to our SEFI forum.
This is not healthy for the forum. I request everybody to upload their spreadsheet/programs to this site and enrich it. The members may arrange some "spreadsheet drive month" for this.
Please let me know your comments.
Regards Amitava Bhattacharjee Kolkata, India.

Dear Mr. Bhattacharjee,
I would like to address the issues to the best of my capacity one by one:
Issue 1: It is quite usual that an engineer might not agree with the arrangement of bars that STAAD or for that matter any design softwares give for a reinforced concrete design. The reinforcement detailing is an art in itself and very often the designing needs us to invoke iterative procedures. Each and every engineer develops their own way to detail a reinforced concrete section to their satisfaction. My idea is - no design software can grapple the various ways in which a human mind can approach a problem.
On the other hand, steel design would need checking for the interaction equations for a pre-specified section - which can be easily coded.
Thus, I would not really agree that the concrete design in STAAD is poor.
Issue 2: If the lock is a factor which prevents you from using different codes that are available in STAAD,this is for your information that you can use different codes using one single lock. The licence file that would be used to update the lock will have the requisite information.
Issue 3: There is a verification maual for the STAAD.Pro software. This document verifies the STAAD's results against the results of standard problems in standard text books. Click on the following link to have access to the verification manual for STAAD: http://www.reiworld.com/Product/Pro/STAADPro_2007_Verification_Manual.pdf
Issue 4:While I agree that creating excel sheets is a very good way to carry on the daily design routines and check the calculations reported by a softewre - there is another powerful feature as far as STAAD is concerned. This is called the "OPENSTAAD" feature - where in you can use a small macro written in VB to tap in the output and input information and use them to your requirements. You can even import the reaults in an excel sheet using this.
Warm Regards, Sudip
