TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION
Dear Engineering Geologist R.M. Ekram > Deputy Director, Geological Survey of Bangladesh, Dhaka,Bangladesh/Asia
This refers to my mobile phone conversations with you a short while ago in this respect.
Tsunami safety standards for nuclear facilities are to be discussed at an International Conference arranged by the IAEA in Tokyo, Japan.
Japanese Experts will help IAEA to up grade Tsunami Safety Code in the event of a movie like super ocean wide tsunami similar to 26 Dec.' 04 Indian Ocean Tsunami originating from off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
The IAEA,Vienna, Austria, framed Tsunami Safety Code almost quarter of a century ago with the guide line that a nuclear facility located in tsunami prone zone to be built in such a way so that it is above the highest tsunami wave amplitude ever recorded in an area being considered. But contrary to this 26 Dec.' 04 Indian Ocean Tsunami wave amplitude was more than any on historical record which forced shutdown of an Indian nuclear plant due to on rush of sea water over there.
The IAEA will take Japanese help because it has so far done extensive research work pertinent to tsunami and earthquake as it has developed proper home work for estimating the size of a probable tsunami by analyzing seabed structure as well as computer aided animation to project the scale of damage to nuclear plants.
With regards and best wishes to you and your family.
Sincerely yours,
