Dear Shaji, The poles carrying electrical wires are designed mainly for horizontal pull due to broken wire condition and wind load on its face. These will induce lateral loads on the pole. The pole base (subjected to horizontal forces) will be embedded into firm soil to the required depth, which acts as the foundation. These bases behave somewhat similar to laterally loaded short piles, the failure of which occurs due to the rigid body rotation about a fulcrum. You can use Broms Chatrs / IS 2911 Method to analyse the depth of embedment, knowing the value of Modulus of Horizontal Subgrade Reaction of the soil. The attached PDF file contains drawings on the recommended depth of embedment for different heights of poles as per Ceylon EB Standards, though its design is not given. May we know, for which organization do you propose to design the pole bases ? What are the related specifications ? I hope you are a structural engineer from Kerala.
Best wishes, E S Jayakumar
