An article by Anup D Shirhatti
Be it great palaces, canals, dams or brihadeshwara temple or any other structure, it is necessary to create twice , once in paper and than constructed with mortar and bricks on ground. Likewise any problem has to envisaged by two principles one is from whole to part and second one being while locating any point on ground with minimum two reference points.
Indian wisdom being transcendental has explained this concept through the Ramayana, There is an illustration where Hanuman is faced with a unique problem he has to bring the Sanjivini parvat to save lives. The first thing he did was to jump from Shrilanka to Himalayas. Then he became very large much greater than the size of mountain and again jumped back to shrilanka to give medicine. The main principle to be observed is, the problem has to physically measured on the ground, To perceive the problem we have to become larger than problem and grasp the whole picture, than parts of the picture will fit in jigsaw puzzle.
The third aspect is power of observation and correlation, suppose in there is a problem say we have to connect two places for transportation, first step is identification of profile of the area if there is a flat terrain than we connect by road, if there is a valley portion than we provide bridge and if there is a hill portion we provide tunnel. So is in life just like sunzu told if you know yourself and your enemy you will win the war, you know yourself but not your enemy you will lose as much as you won and if you neither know yourself nor your enemy you will be defeated in the war. So generally fear is our worst enemy which can be won by understanding our capabilities and understanding our problems

This article by Er Anup D
Article discusses the basic principles of Surveying , the activity which transform geometry on paper ( drawn on smaller scale) to geometry on ground on full scale. Surveying is the first Civil Engineering subject taught to Engineering students right from semester 1. Chai surveying, plain table survey, Theodolite were the earlier instruments . But know Total Station and even more sophisticated and advanced instruments of Surveying are available to Surveyors.
As the Greek Philosophers said that Man ,know thyself , Er Anup also echoed the need to know the problem fully alongside knowing oneself capabilities.
Surveyors job is still tougher, as they have to reach even such places , not habitated by humans.
GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA has developed maps of entire inaccessible hilly terrains at that time , when basic instruments were chains and tapes. Aerial surveying / Drone surveying / satellite maps are now the advanced ways . |
