for most of Bridge piers generally Circular columns will be used because of Symmetrical axis of the Column and to have good ambience and maneuverability. |

If we take same size of square and circular section to carry some load say 'X' kN,which one will have the more load carrying capacity? |

For bridge design across river course, circular column is provided to divert waterway suitably in the upstream and downstream. For bridges in city like metro you can see only square column. Circular column will take more load only in case of helical ties. But in practice only circular rings are provided as column ties. Based on area of column and reinforcement provided the column with take appropriate loads. V. M. Rajan |

Thank you Rajan Sir,
圆形columns(piers)are used in bridges in metro cities since it reduces the water impact pressure on columns and also due to its symmetrical axis it has better load transfer capacity.
Please provide you suggestions.
