Dear Engineers,

It is really great to see codes being revised to keep upfront with the latest developments.

But the revision should be on an regularly basis and amended quickly.

Technically speaking the revision of codes should improve on the previous codes and not change the whole concept and mathematics. For eg revision for IS 800 though exhaustive is totally different from the previous version. What happens if a structural member does not satisfy the present code and satisfies the previous code?

The aim of revision should be to refine the previous code and make the structures optimally designed. One should compare the way the softwares are upgraded regularly and in an phased and simple manner so that the user of previous version need not feel lost.

Such measures would motivate the people in the profession to show more interest in the development of the codes. Now, i feel the revisions are thrust upon the engineering fraternity rather than natural transition.

I would request Dr.Sudhir Jain to conduct an E-conf before starting revising the code to find out the difficulties and possible improvements rather than discussing after the code has been drafted without knowing the problems of existing users and not utilising their experience in drafting the code.

I hope my suggestions reflect the way the codes are revised in the international scenario.

Thank you

D.S.SRIDHAR
