一些专家强调the fact that the seismic response/beaviour of foundations is what governs the seismic response of the superstructure. They insist that no damage can be permitted in the foundations and hence foundations should remain elastic. To this end, they propose to capacity-design the foundations such that the plastic hinges form in the base columns, rather than the foundations. These experts also insist on the accurate calculation of the moment capacity of the base columns taking into account the effect of lap splices in the evaluation of the moment capacity.

I invite the opinions of everyone, particularly the moderators and the resource persons on this issue. I also request them to throw some light on how IS codes tackle this issue.

Earthquake is result of ground motion and foundation is the first element to experience the jerk. The experts who suggest conservative elastic design of the foundations are fully correct. The Russian method of designing earthquake resistant buildings was providing hinged base. This may be thought of up to which storey this structural system would be applicable. Our convention of providing fixed connection between column and foundation may be revisited.

Though i am student of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering i didnt post any thing here. Please find one presentation regarding seismic design of pile foundation. It will serve two purpose of this forum for me. It also showcase use of advance finite element method for geotechnical engineering i.e. FLAC 3D which i was mentioning in some of the post of this e-conf.

I hope it helps.
