Agreeable proposition It is not only for the professional to be competent but all trade involved should be properly trained. Just a minor example is requirement of concrete spacers around the elements. No proper attention is given by most of the engineers & workers. Similarly, curing is not given proper attention as well & ther are many other example It is also to be thought how to improve the inspection standards & related staff trained for that Eng Suraj Singh

这是令人震惊的听到TV last night that part of a building of Times of India under construction in Ahmedabad collapsed, possibly killing many workers. It is not only tragic for the families of the dead and injured but is also a sober reminder to all of us that all is not well with our construction industry.
Only last year, a part of another commercial building under construction in a prominent area of Ahmedabad had collapsed.
Both the above buildings must have been designed by "structural engineers", constructed by "contractors" and supervised by the "construction engineers". Hence, the responsibility lies with the professionals associated with the construction industry.
Incidents like these should make us resolve to work harder for the upliftment of our profession and following action points come to mind:
a) We resolve to do the best professional job regardless of how much is the fees. There are no excuses allowed to a surgeon for doing an unsafe surgery just because he agreed to a lower fees from a patient.
b) We stop complaining about other stackholders to express our disappointments and frustrations. We must focus on what WE can do rather than what others should do.
c) We refuse to undertake assignments for which we are not competent.
d) We help other professional colleauges and youngsters including students in learning to be good professionals.
e) We assign a fraction of our time and income for our own professional growth and the improvement of the profession generally.
This is my emotional outburst and is not meant to be a sermon to colleagues on SEFI, since I feel rather disturbed with the incident. I know that most of us must feel quite agitated with such incidents.
Best regards,

What has happened in A!bad needs not only to be condemned but also to be investigated as to how such a thing can happen after concern shown for proper design and quality control as an afterthought of earthquake.I had sent a mail sometime back giving instances of a no. of 4/5 storied bldgs.withstanding 1997 EQ.in jabalpur even though they were not designed for resistance to EQ.These have underreamed pile foundations with pilecaps and framed superstructure.I had also stressed the need of further research of such bldgs.for their capability of EQ. resistance.I do not know if any other friend has such an experience or if any work is being done on this subject. with regards Er.G.D.Rao

Dear Engineers
Emotional conduct & thinking is not good for the professionals
Best attempt shall be to be clear of what one should do in profession
Engineers have to chart out how to make the involved parties work together to achieve the engineering products, the end user waits for
Unfortunately, over profit making target by the promoter is root of every problem & chalta hae approach has to be amended in all respects
Engineers have to think in affirmative terms of enforcement of requirements for which more practical input is necessary, more time devotion is demanded on the project.
Design & construction engineers shall have to coordinate all times
Architects shall have to amend their gross conduct which is really too difficult to achieve.
Designers should also realise the site practical problems & adopt experience based approach & not fully theoretical at every consideration
