Dear Sefians
Generally a base plate and a Cap plate is provided at bottom and at top of steel columns consisting of I sections. These plates are welded with girder. Heat produced at the time of welding makes both ends of column brittle. Incase of earthquake this could be the cause of sudden failure. Is there any alternative to this problem.

Dear Fellow Engineer Mr. Daljeet Sidhu, I think this problem of brittleness developed at the joint of base plate/cap plate and I section due to the heat produced during welding can be solved by Normalising process. I hope this solves your Problem. With Best Wishes N.Y.Choudhary
