Dear All,
The devastation caused by earthquake and tsunami has been immense. The immediate tragedy of death and injury will be followed by the tragedy of long term displacement and economic uprootment.
I can empathize with the affected persons in so far as the unexpectedness is concerned. The quake of Gujarat 2001 was just as unexpected for us. Though we too could have known of it as a possibility. Fact is we did not.
Much as we must work towards mitigating risk of loss of life from tsunamis, we must also recognize that nature ultimately 并造成严重破坏的能力。
So if the residents of Delhi and other at-risk places think a major earthquake will not strike in their lifetime, maybe they should discard such "hope-for-the-best-and-forget-the-worst" attitude and start preparing for the worst.
It is not just tsunamis we must start being concerned about. But we should start being concerned about all mortal risks we carry in our day-to-day lives.
Again the person on the street was unaware of risks. That we must dispel. We must launch initiatives that inform people directly of the risks from earthquakes.
