Dear Sefians In case of recent Pakistan EQ I was at home, I came out of the house, while standing on road, what I felt was like standing on a small wooden plank on a wave. The basic thing is earth is combination of soil particles that act as liquid in case of EQ. Thus a big ship is safe in such situations if it is designed to take the forces since you never know at what point it is supported by water wave I mean at some time it could be one wave (tide) at center supporting the whole ship in that case ship will act as cantilever on both sides, similarly in other case it could be simply supported on tides. Keeping above concept in mind my view is to provide isolation joints at appropriate point so that large moment may not be produced. If the foundation is strong enough to take care of such huge stresses then continuous may be better. Your turn please Daljeet
